Abstract

This study was conducted for 30 days at the Aquaculture Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Universitas Riau, Pekanbaru. The aim of the study was to determine the optimal salinity for achieving good physiological performance of baung fish (Hemibagrus nemurus) juveniles. The method used was an experimental approach employing a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments and four replicates. The salinity treatments consisted of 3 ppt, 6 ppt, 9 ppt, 12 ppt, and 15 ppt.


The test organisms were baung fish juveniles with an average size of 7.17 ± 0.04 cm. The juveniles were obtained from the Tibun Fish Hatchery, Kampar. The experimental units consisted of aquaria measuring 60 × 40 × 40 cm.


The results showed that the lowest oxygen consumption occurred at a salinity of 3 ppt, with a value of 0.9 mg O₂/g/hour. The highest survival rate was also observed at 3 ppt, reaching 100%, while the best growth in weight and length was recorded in the 3 ppt treatment, with increases of 8.90 g and 2.04 cm, respectively. Water quality parameters during the experiment were within suitable ranges, with temperatures of 25–30 °C and dissolved oxygen levels of 5.04–8.04 ppm.
