Abstract

White snapper or Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) commands a premium in Indonesian aquaculture; however, high fry mortality during the nursery stage often curtails profitability, with unstable water quality and erratic feeding cited as key contributors. To address this problem, the present study examined the growth, survival, and water-quality management of white snapper fry cultured in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) at the Batam Marine Aquaculture Center. Over 28 days, fry length and weight were measured biweekly, and temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and salinity were recorded weekly. Descriptive statistics revealed an average fork length of 8.0 cm, a mean weight of 8.3 g, and a survival rate of 95.8%. These results paralleled stable water conditions (temperature: 28.9-32.1°C, pH: 7.63-8.5, DO: 5.4 mg/L, salinity: 28-30 ppt). These data suggest that RAS, paired with regular intensive feeding, enhances fry growth and survivorship, thereby improving nursery efficiency and advancing sustainable aquaculture in Indonesia..
